The fire risk assessor will introduce himself and ask to meet the responsible person for the premises. In the absence of the responsible person a competent colleague may take the role as long as they are familiar with the access, layout and operation of the premises in normal day to day running.
The assessor will talk through the relevant aspects of his visit and the available information sources open to the responsible person. The sources will include documentation, emergency procedures and safety records, along with insurance and special requirements for the safe running of the premises.
Finally, the assessor will make suggestions regarding any non-compliances that need to be addressed or improvements that could be made. This is also an opportunity for the responsible person to ask any questions they may have following the visit.
The result of the assessment will take the form of a consultative report which can be used in the future assessment of fire risk and related hazards. This report will be presented in a logical format and will meet the current building regulations and health & safety requirements.
The report comprises a document that details all aspects of the assessment which include such items as the fire alarm, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, service records, signage and escape routes.
Any relevant photographs and regulatory requirements supporting the assessor's findings will also be included in the report. Any risks will be categorised, using terms including moderate, tolerable, and, in some cases, substantial.
Within one week of the site visit, the detailed, insurance approved report encompassing all the assessor's findings will be posted to you. It is common for the assessor to re-contact the responsible person at this time to deal with any further queries arising from the report.
